Every creek was running in Northern NY this weekend..I
mean EVERY creek-drainage ditches were runnable creeks, creeks were raging
torents of angry water, rivers were big enough that children looked at
them and cried. This should have been a creek-boating trip! Throughout
Moosefest weekend and the days following, however, I found myself inexplicably
drawn out of my creekboat into my playboat. The reason for this seemingly
insane decision can be captured in 3 words: INNER CITY STRIFE. This big
wave playground only comes in when the Black River is way high (above
12,000 cfs is best). There are 3 waves, with the top one being the largest
and fastest. The top wave is sick-like almost as good as Lachine, and
all 3 waves have a great eddy!!!

Everyone showed-up to play. Corey, Jeremy, Jen and
I were one crew: Corey hit some GINORMOUS mcnasty’s, blunts, helixes and
a few air screws-Jeremy learned to clean blunt, Jen got back in the saddle
for the first time since her head concussion on the lower gauley for 2
days of big-wave fun (not bad for her 35th day in a kayak!), and I was
working entry back loops, helixes, pan-ams/silly flips, big backstabs,
air blunts, occasional Mcnasty’s, air screws, and Billy’s newer move the
Flashback (clean spin where you clean backstab the 2nd half). Pat Camblin
and some Monkmans showed-up from Canada, doing what he normally does,
which is to go bigger than everyone else. Shane and lots of Team Liquid
Logic paddlers were there having a blast. Ted Devoe consistantly hit beautiful
air way out on the green in his Turbo. Joe Stumpfel went way to big for
his own good, while Seth Chapelle and Steve Graybill were also ripping
it up. Bryon Dorr worked lefty blunts and backstabs after repeatedly proving
that he could get up in the air to the right any time he wanted. GREAT
FUN!!!!

By Monday, we started building fires to keep warm-it’s
been really, really cold up here! Corey, Jen, and I drove-up yesterday
to Garb (Inner City is dropping-out)-hungry for more air. Garb was sick,
but there’s no photos because the lighting was all off. After spending
all summer on Garb, it was like coming home: huge air off the rails, FAST
down-the-middle air, insanely fast foam. Me like garb. The All-star was
sweet on every wave we surfed the trip. It wheels-up great for take-offs,
helixes with ease, doesn’t tend to pearl, and left me looking for more.
All these photos were taken by me, Jen Kellerman, Bryon Dorr, or Corey
Volt-ENJOY!!!!
