Herschel Finch is from northern Virginia and lives in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, so he knows the Shenandoah River like his backyard…literally. He lives only 3 blocks away from it. But on any given fishing trip, you may find him headed north to the Susquehanna in Pennsylvania or the Potomac River Maryland, or maybe south to the mighty James or New River in southwest VA or even the Gorge in West Virginia. There aren’t many rivers left between the New York/PA border, south to North Carolina and West to Kentucky that Herschel hasn’t fished at one time or the other. As far as he’s concerned, no finer game-fish swims than the Smallmouth Bass. It’s by far his favorite quarry on the water. But it doesn’t take much to talk him into going Muskie huntin’ either. As he and his toothy critter chasing friends like to say: “Fish for something that can bite cha back, you big sissy!” When he’s not fishing, Herschel is a member of the advisory board for the Shenandoah RiverKeeper, serves as the Conservation Chairman for the Potomac River Smallmouth Club, and is an active member of the Izaak Walton League.
