Snow Day! (waterfalls involved) and there ARE paddlers in Memphis! :-) by teamjk | Feb 3, 2010 | Whitewater | 0 comments By Boyd Ruppelt Hey guys! Well obviously things got a bit cold again as old man winter decided to tell us not to put those shorts on just yet. Memphis went from warm, open-window weather to frozen in no time. We started off with some good snow Friday but then it rained (the freezing kind) and packed it all into thick sheets of ice. My street looked more like an ice hockey match with cars in ditches and big crashes around, so I decided to abuse my snowboard on the trails set up behind my house. After a good log slide and then a not so good log slide, I decided I was getting too old to abuse myself like this (my birthday is Saturday woohoo!) so we decided to do some creekin’! This wasn’t a super easy task since Memphis was a mad house of bumper cars and maniacs so we decided to rally some of the Memphis troops for a fun day in sunny Alabama! We left at 5 AM in a typical Memphis paddler’s fashion, only to find clear streets just over the border. Alabama showed no sign of snow or ice and with a high predicted of 44 degrees, it was feeling like summer already (in my drysuit). The group consisted of myself, Jackson Kayak’s own Samantha Brunner, and our Memphis friend’s Phil, Michael, Jeff, Kevin, and Bryant. So I thought I’d share some photos… you can see them all at: enjoy the pics, a KAVU day for sure!
