Another Exciting day at PWS By MORGAN aka Morgs by Jezz | Mar 24, 2011 | Hero, jacksonkayak.com, Uncategorized, Whitewater | 0 comments We Set off at the beginning of the day to look for any changes to 400m grade 2-3 rapid, to find a munchy first drop fun for loops and cartwheels if you can control that massive sweep across from the left shoulder, good place to throw Mc Nasties as Jez and I found out. Third wave a small fun little play wave perfect for beginners, but doesn’t measure up if your trying to throw something bigger. Third wave a small fun little play wave perfect for beginners, but doesn’t measure up if your trying to throw something bigger. Still good spot for Flat spinning, backstabs and roundhouse and the occasional cartwheel. Moving down the strait to a spot known as sweet lips is flat but a line of bollards makes for some fun grinding and possible air in a creek boat. This sets up yet another small play wave, with potential for big left blunts if you can hit the sweet spot. Which leads into Mainwave, which has been pushed up onto the wall that creates a micro eddy, possible to catch but even if you miss it you drop off and sometimes do a cool mystery move. Or the other option is to aim for the right side of the rooster tail mainwave creates and get some air, throw a wave wheel or a big kick flip, i manages to land a few flat which feels good. Moving down another few small play spots perfect for beginners and teaching basic freestyle moves, but watch out for those slalom paddlers, seems to be a practice spot for them, you may acknowledge them but they wont stop for you. Moving down to the second beach, we have Skippy wave Formally known as jacks. This hole is where I have been spending most of my time as it has the most play. Good for big loops cartwheels Bothsides split-wheeling left blunts. And also have been working on McNasties there. Have even tried donkey flips on the surfers right shoulder, cant say ive accomplished that. But the problem with Skippy Wave is that you can run into trouble with the rafts surfing on the small pour over known as number two. Usually you can wait out the Mystery move underneath the raft but occasionally the carnage produces a swimmer and as Em unfortunately found, a big graze to the side of her face and a golf ball eyebrow due to the concrete slab holding number two. After the beach the final stretch of grade 3 rapid, Plenty of small play spots and small eddies to catch and have some fun in, but half way down we find the premiere wave/hole feature of PWS, “The Deep Fryer”. Fryer has the potential for Air Blunts and Air Screws, you can also throw pretty much any wave move. I’ve been working on a helix, and left blunts as well as my airscrews but unfortunately the fryer is not at its best. The speed of the water rushing down coupled with the bollards backing up the water have created a very large very munchy, VERY SHALLOW hole, incredibly hard to set up on and hard to throw down. Even if you do get the bounce your looking for, you find the concrete with your bow very quickly. As my boat and paddle have found out. As I said fryer I very shallow and if you flush off the back be careful not to scrape your head on the ground as you pass over it upside down. I was unfortunate to land on my head on that part. Jarred my neck. Really Hurt!!! Past fryer we have the final play wave, always fun for some party surfing nice and soft plenty of room to roll, a perfect beginners hole. Then finally last drop which has been relatively flat recently, but is starting to show signs of the munchy pour over that is there in winter. After that its smooth sailing back to the conveyer maybe a few quick flat-water cartwheels and loops, then up the conveyer to do it all again. You may think it gets boring doing the same rapid over and over again which is why you must change it up each lap. Maybe do a no paddle lap or raft up with your mates and get trashed its all good. Just hanging out with mates. Try a different boat, jump in a funyack, or the oc1 is always fun. But hopefully Stuart (manager) changes the course up soon. Cant wait to head up to cairns get some more experience up my sleeve and see some world class paddling. Here are a few pictures form the last year.
