Zen, Vilain and Hero: the flatwater speed test

Ever wonder which boat is the fastest? I mean it is easy to say that a boat is fast, but when you say such a thing most of the time it is base on feeling or design expectation, rarely an objective measure.
This spring, I had to choose a boat for racing and I was wondering which of the Zen or the Vilain, two fast boats, will be faster for the race. Is the Zen really faster than the Vilain? Is it better more length or to have a boat that float higher with less resistance?
To help me with my coaching and my personal training, I got a Timex® Ironman® Global Trainer™ with GPS Technology. One of the tool of the watch is the ability to give your speed. With this toy in hand I decided to know which boat, from the Kayak Saguenay fleet, is really the fastest on flat water.

So one evening, I decided to put my theory to test. I will do a circuit where I will sprint in straight line the same 75m with the watch taking the lap and then rest paddling up to the start, 3 times in a row with each boat I want to test.

I will start with my slalom boat, a Vjada Kapsl 3,6Lm, a boat I know for sure to be the fastest in the group and where I know that what’s preventing me from going faster is not the boat but myself. This will be my 100% time boat. The boats I have on hand to test are: 2008 Hero, 2011 Hero, Vilain S, Zen 65, Zen 75. Sadly, I didn’t have the big Vilain anymore!

The test went well, here’s the result:

The results are interesting; it sure is for only a short 75m on flat water. It will be interesting to try again but with a different setup: more than one tester, with different paddling level, on a whitewater slalom course, and so on.

But I was surprise. For my size (5’10” – 175lbs), the Vilain S will be the choice over the Zen 65 in the same weight range. But then the Zen 75 is way faster, and should be the final choice; too bad I didn’t have a Vilain to compare…
The Hero 2011 came has a surprise. It’s fast, if not faster than the Zen, but I did have a feeling to go faster in the Zen.

This was a simple test, if you like it, let me know, I will try to make a more « scientific » next time with the new Karma coming in!!!

Zen, Vilain et Hero : le test de vitesse en eaux calmes

Vous êtes vous déjà demandez quel kayak est le plus rapide? Je veux dire, il est facile de dire qu’un tel kayak est rapide. Mais est-ce que ce point s’appuie sur un argument objectif ou sur un feeling en le pagayant ou encore seulement sur les attentes du design.
Ce printemps, j’ai eu à choisir un bateau pour un boatercross et je me demandais lequel du Zen ou du Vilain, deux embarcations rapides, serait le meilleur choix. Le Zen est-il vraiment plus rapide que le Vilain? Vaut-il mieux avoir de la longueur ou de la flottaison qui enlève de la résistance?
Pour m’aider dans mon travail d’entraîneur et ma formation personnelle, j’ai acquis Timex® Ironman® Global Trainer™ avec la technologie GPS. Un des outils de la montre est la capacité de donner votre vitesse. Avec ce jouet dans la main, j’ai décidé de savoir quel kayak, dans la flotte de Kayak Saguenay, est vraiment le plus rapide sur l’eau calme.

Le test est simple, effectuer 75m sprint en ligne droite chrono, suivi du retour au point de départ tranquillement, et se 3 fois de suite avec chaque bateau que je veux tester.
J’ai commencé avec mon bateau slalom, un Vjada Kapsl 3,6 Lm, un kayak dont je suis sûr de sa rapidité et où je sais que ce qui m’empêche d’aller plus vite, ce n’est pas le bateau, mais moi-même. Ce sera mon bateau étalon, donc 100% du temps. Les kayaks que j’ai sous la main pour tester sont: 2008 Hero, 2011 Hero, Vilain S, Zen 65, Zen 75. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas eu le gros Vilain de disponible!

Voici le résultat:

Les résultats sont intéressants, mais on ne parle que d’une personne sprintant sur 75m en eau calme. Il sera intéressant d’essayer de nouveau avec une configuration différente: plus d’un testeur, avec le niveau de pagayeur différent, sur un parcours de slalom en eau vive, et ainsi de suite.

Personnellement, j’ai été surpris. À mon gabarit (5’9’’ – 175lbs), le Vilain S est plus rapide que le Zen 65 pour la même gamme de poids. Cependant le Zen 75 reste le meilleur choix, dommage que je n’ai pas eu un Vilain pour comparer…
Le Hero 2011 a été une surprise dans les performances. Il est rapide, sinon plus rapide que le Zen 65, bien que j’avais le sentiment d’aller plus vite dans ce dernier.

Ceci n’est qu’un test simple. Si vous aimez, laissez-moi le savoir et je vais essayer de faire un temps plus «scientifique» la prochaine fois. Surtout avec le nouveau Karma à venir!
