2013 – My Last Year as a Cadet by Hayden Voorhees | Jan 22, 2014 | Kid's Kayaks, Whitewater, Zen | 1 comment I wanted to tell you thank you for all of the support that you have given me over the years and especially this last year. I am looking forward to 2014 to move out of Cadets and into Junior Men’s competition. I have finally grown out of my Shooting Star and now am paddling the 2014 Rock Star S and the Zen 55. I can’t believe how these boats have made my moves bigger and faster. The year of 2013 was one of the best kayaking years I have ever had. I have learned how to compete under pressure, learned a variety of new freestyle moves, and have been able to improve my river running skills by paddling the Middle and Lower 5 miles of the North Fork Payette. One of the highlights of the year and most educational, was watching my older brother compete in North Carolina at the 2013 ICF Freestyle Kayaking World Championships. He earned a bronze medal with hard work and dedication this year. I learned that to be the best, you have to train very hard, just like Alec did. This year I also started trying new disciplines in kayaking, such as C-1 and Slalom. I think that these new disciplines will help me become a better boater in many ways. I had many accomplishments I am very proud of this year! My accomplishments include: 1st Place Cadet Boatercross- Reno Riverfest 1st Place Cadet Freestyle- Buena Vista Paddlefest 2nd Place Cadet Freestyle- Lyons Outdoor Games 3rd Place Cadet Slalom- Lyons Outdoor Games 3rd Place Cadet Downriver Sprint- Lyons Outdoor Games 3rd Place Men’s 8 Ball Race- GoPro Mountain Games 4th Place Cadet Freestyle- Fibark 3rd Place Cadet Slalom- Junior Nationals 3rd Place Cadet Slalom- Fibark 1st Place Cadet Freestyle- Payette River Games Places Paddled: Idaho Nevada Colorado North Carolina Personal 1st Descents: Middle 5 North Fork Payette Arkansas River- the Numbers Arkansas River- the Fractions Nantahala River at NOC Favorite Play Spots: -Kelly’s Whitewater Park -Reno Whitewater Park -Buena Vista WW Park -NOC -Boise WW Park 2014: -Reno River Festival -GoPro Mountain Games -Lyons Outdoor games -Fibark -Payette River Games -World Cup in Europe -Top to bottom North Fork Payette I would like to say a big thanks to my sponsors (Jackson kayak, NRS, WRSI Helmets, Asana, and Alpenglow) for making gear that fits me. I would also like to thank the Donnely’s for letting me stay with them for a month. It allowed me to compete around Colorado. Thanks to Jud Keiser for being my coach and giving me tips in Colorado. Finally I would like to thank my parents for keeping on the water. 1 Comment Peter Holcombe on January 22, 2014 at 4:53 pm Way to go Hayden! We hope to paddle a lot more with you in 2014.
