Springtime in the Sierras by Matt Davis | May 4, 2017 | Fishing, Fishing Reports, Kraken | 0 comments Up until recently, I haven’t had much in the way of free time. Which means my fishing time has been greatly reduced! Well finally, the weather cooperated and I had a day off to make a run to one of my favorite sierra lakes, Bear River Reservoir. I arrived to the lake at around 8am to some “brisk” conditions at 34 degrees! With all the snow, the launch isn’t open yet, so that means a little hike through the snow is required. Unlike my last snowy adventure here, this time around the lake is full and my hike would be far less rigorous. So, I got all my gear loaded in the kayak, added a strap to the front handle, and started dragging it down to the water. Conditions were spectacular weather wise! The sun was shining and the water was like glass. I prepped a few more things just before I got into the kayak and slide down the hill into the water. Probably not the best idea to do that in 37 degree water, but it was fun! I had a pretty simple plan, troll some large Rapalas to the main inlet and then work that area by casting some of my favorite trout lures. I didn’t get any action along the way, but did encounter an obstacle in the way of a large sheet of ice. Lucky for me it was mostly slushy due to the sun and someone had paved a trail a day or two prior. It took a bit of work but I made it to the inlet and began working the area thoroughly. I lost a couple fish, one that looked to be a big rainbow, but other than that no other action. I assume the front that moved through overnight and blue bird skies today didn’t help my situation. I didn’t mind though, it was a spectacular day and I had the lake all to myself. Now one thing you can almost always count on in the sierras is the wind coming up in the afternoon. So, after a quick lunch I began working my way back towards the launch. Sure enough the wind did pick up and some cloud cover moved in. I stopped along the way to cast around some of the creek inlets and managed to pick up a couple of healthy rainbows. Not monsters, but they had lots of fight! I trolled some more on the way back and also did a little jigging for Mackinaw. Unfortunately, there was no more action for me. Off the water by 6pm and began the hike back to the truck. The fishing wasn’t perfect, but I couldn’t ask for a better day on the water! Submit a Comment Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
