Have You Ever Flipped? by Clay Grace | Nov 7, 2019 | Fishing Feature, Uncategorized | 4 comments “Have you ever flipped!!!!??” This is the question I am asked the most when people find out that I fish from a kayak. It’s a legit question for sure, but I have always been surprised by the number of times this question comes up. Granted it comes from friends or acquaintances that haven’t kayaked very much. Many of them may have kayaked or canoed back in their younger years. Some have grown up fishing from a bass boat and don’t realize that today’s kayaks are far from the tippy little vessels they may have paddled years ago. Stand-ability on the Jackson Kayak Liska. I think there is a preconceived notion for those that haven’t paddled in a while that kayaks are unstable and that you need above average balance to paddle, let alone fish from one. Obviously, they are thinking of older style kayaks or kayaks that are designed more for speed than stability. Today’s kayaks are more stable than ever, especially fishing models. I think most people would be surprised just how stable a platform a kayak can be to fish from. Many of my friends and family were surprised when I put them in one of my kayaks for a demo. Jackson Kayak was at the forefront in making fishing kayaks that were stable enough to stand up in and cast. Not much has changed as far as stability goes. There are many great models to choose from and if it has Jackson Kayak on it you can bet it is a solid kayak. Standing and casting in the original 2011 Jackson Coosa. Jackson Kayak even has a new pedal drive kayak called the Bite FD, for those that would prefer to pedal instead of paddle. Bite Angler is another version designed with everything you need to get you fishing out on your favorite water. The Liska is another great kayak you could demo at your local Jackson Kayak dealer. The stand-ability on all of these kayaks definitely live up to the hype. Bite FD with Flex Drive System for those who would rather pedal. Ha! Just messing around. I always want to reply back to that question with a question…. Have you ever tripped? Reply Clay Grace on December 7, 2019 at 8:41 pm Ha! Terry, I have flipped a couple of times. I trip a couple of times a day tho!???? Reply Steve Burnell on December 6, 2019 at 10:09 am Clay, I agree that Jackson makes some very stable fishing kayaks. I have fished from a Coosa HD for about 4 years now. And to answer your question…yes I have flipped! Just once though! I am fairly tall (6’3″) and prefer to fish with my seat in the raised position. This obviously gives me a high center of gravity. I was only in about 3 feet of water when I dropped something (can’t remember what it was) into the water. It’s human nature to twist and lurch for the object! In an instant I was in the water. I have had friends do the same thing! Every instance that I have experienced or witnessed a “flip” involved the knee-jerk reaction to dropping something from the kayak. So for your followers just getting into kayak fishing…know that flipping is a possibility…fight the urge to lean over your kayak to fetch a dropped object and always wear a life jacket! Reply Clay Grace on December 7, 2019 at 8:16 pm Steve, You’re spot on! I once got spit out by my Coosa HD while looking for my son’s cell phone he had dropped in the water.
