DIY Gym Kayak by crystalgustin | Dec 30, 2019 | 2014 Karma Unlimited, Whitewater, Whitewater Feature | 1 comment DIY Gym Kayak How to Make your own kayak in the gym.Unfortunately, in the winter I am in a gym more than I am outside in my kayak. However, I made a cheap piece of gym equipment that helps me simulate my kayak stroke while working with those specific muscle groups. It is nothing fancy and it should not need detailed instructions (just take a look at the photos). You just need some pvc pipe, a drill and a drill bit. I ordered bands on amazon and this is what I use for different resistance. Make sure you buy bands that have a small carabiner on the end so you can attach to the pvc pipe. Drill a hole on each end of your pvc pipe making sure you are pretty close to the end of the pipe so that the carabiner will attach. Attach the bands to the pipe and you are set up. I use a squat rack and a bench for this set up by simply attaching the bands to the rack and then I move the bench away from the rack and sit on it just like I would in a kayak. I then use the same motion as I would paddling a kayak by moving one side forward toward my feet and “take a stroke” to create the movement and just repeating on the other side.
