How to Tie The Grey Fred Fly

Let’s talk about how to tie the Grey Fred Fly. Peter Loevendahl from Denmark created the Grey Fred to target the Danish sea trout. It is a killer baitfish pattern for coastal environments so this fly should be a must have in your fly box for speckled trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, or any species that would be interested in feeding on small bright fish or shrimp.

Materials for Grey Fred:
Hook: Gamakatsu B10S Singer size 8.
Thread: 6/0 Grey color.
Tail: A few strands of grey ghost krystal flash and a couple of grizzly marabou feathers.
Body: Hare’s Ear Ice Dubbing Color.
Rib: 6lb Fluorocarbon.
Hackle: Grizzly body hackle.
Eyes: Medium bead chain eyes on top of hook.
Head: Same body dubbing over the eyes and a small head from tying thread.

After tying a few of these flies I had the opportunity to test this fly in a small private pond from the Kilroy HD. The fly managed to attract some small largemouth bass and even a small bluegill. In my opinion this fly should be everyone’s fly box for bass and bream. How as soon as the boat ramps open up here in South Carolina I will be able to test this fly for some speckled trout.
