How to Repair a Hollow Body Top Water Frog by Darrell Olson | Aug 22, 2022 | Featured Post, Fishing, Fishing Feature, Fishing Instruction, Freshwater, Instructional, jacksonkayak.com, JAdventures Main Banner | 0 comments I have never used those top water frogs, so I decided to leave my other rigs and lures at the cabin. I decided that if I’m going to learn how to use a frog and catch some bass using this lure the temptation of using my other setups needed to stay behind. My normal self would put the frog away if I was not having any success, I’m sure some of you know what I’m saying. So, I took a rod setup with a frig and paddled the Liska to some areas on the lake where there were some lily pads to try my skill against the bass. I managed to get some blow ups on the frog and a few tugs. Unfortunately, I kept losing the fish in the weeds. Then I noticed that the frog was taking on water. After examining the frog, I noticed some tooth punctures in the body of the frog. My guess is that my success were pickerel and not bass. After discovery of the holes in the frog, I thought will this is a bummer; I will have to throw this lure away. Then I had an idea that maybe I could figure out a way to repair the frog. After all you can repair a leaking kayak with plastic and heat, so why not a top water frog made of some type of rubber or pliable plastic. So normally to repair a crack or hole in a kayak you will need a heat gun or a soldering iron to soften up the area and either add plastic or use something that will smooth out the area to prevent water from coming into the kayak. My thought was to use a lighter, a nail, and pliers to hold the hot nail. The process was to heat the nail till it is hot. Then use the hot nail and rub the area of the puncture. Eventually the hole will melt together and seal. I then let the hollow frog body cool down. The puncture hole was sealed but did have a discoloration from the heat removing some of the paint or whatever is used to give the lure a frog like appearance. If you would like to extend the life of your favorite hollow frog lures give this tip a try instead of throwing away that lure. Submit a Comment Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
