Washington, DC offers incredible whitewater at Great Falls! (See Dane, EJ, and Jason Craig’s tour of the falls!) by Will Richardson | Jul 12, 2007 | Rockers, Whitewater | 0 comments Photos It is July in Washington, DC. The Dog Days of Summer; 85 degrees and humid, but with an incredible reprieve from the heat, the Potomac River. The Potomac in the true DC area can be broken down into the Falls, Mather Gorge, Carderock, and Little Falls for whitewater enthusiasts. Today Jason Craig (Reno, age 13), Dane Jackson (13, Rock Island, TN), and EJ( age 43, TN) did three laps on the "Great Falls". The water level at the Little Falls Gauge was at 2.85 which is perfect for both the "Maryland Side" (river left channel), and the Virginia Side (river right channel) but getting a little low for the "Center Lines". We put in at Great Falls Park Maryland, and ran the dam at the top (photo looks like Dane is bow stalling). A short beautiful run down class 2-3 rapids lands you at the top of the falls. If you don’t know where you are going you might find yourself on either the MD or VA side without knowing where you are. Think of it as the a horizon line that is 1/8 of a mile wide with 3 major islands that after you go past you are stuck in that channel. Very cool if you like variety! The rest was a wonderful day of paddling with two incredible 13 year old boys. Check out the photos! We went slalom boating and ran Little Falls with Danny Stock later, more fun! 🙂 EJ Submit a Comment Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
