ACA whitewater kayak instructor development workshop by Will Richardson | May 31, 2007 | Whitewater | 0 comments Jackson Kayak regional team members Rob Terry and Colin Kemp will be teaming up to offer an and exam in Reno, NV. About the Course: Whether you want to earn some extra gas money to pay for those long drives to the put in, safely and effectively introduce your friends to the sport, or develop your personal paddling, teaching and safety skills, this course is it. The first 3/4s of the course, the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW), is designed to help instructor candidates take their personal skill set and refine the elements necessary to excel as kayak instructors in the whitewater environment. During the IDW candidates will have the opportunity to develop stroke modeling skills, participate in safety and rescue drills, practice teaching a variety of topics, and get introduced to the progression that takes uninitiated beginners and turns them into competent class II paddlers. The final element of the course, the Instructor Certifecation Exam (ICE) is designed to assess the candidates skill set and place them at the appropriate level of certification. Candidates who have successfully completed the IDW and ICE can be certified at the Intro to Kayaking, Basic River, or Whitewater level. Adept Descents schedules this 40 hour course to take place over two consecutive weekends, the advantage of this scheduling style is two fold. First, a course that takes place on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday usually allows instructor candidates to avoid using valuable vacation days that could have been put towards personal paddling trips; secondly (and more importantly) it allows candidates to digest what they learn in the first weekend, practice in their free time and return to the course better prepared to excel in the ICE.
