Big Smallmouth From The Big Rig by tjstrong | Mar 14, 2014 | Big Rig, Coosa, Fishing, Freshwater | 0 comments Everyone knows that it has been a brutal winter and most of us have been dealing with some serious cases of cabin fever in anticipation of warmer spring air. I couldn’t get the Big Rig on the water quick enough when temps hit the low 60’s in late February. Many lakes in my area are still frozen over, so I hit a deep, steep sided reservoir that rarely freezes and is known for its great winter smallmouth fishing. The Big Rig is an amazing kayak that impresses me more and more after each use. At 6’6″, 240 lbs., it is the perfect yak for me. It gives me plenty of room for myself and all the gear I could ever want to bring while still being able to paddle and handle exceptionally well. This was my first trip with the Raymarine Dragonfly on the Big Rig and it definitely helped me locate the fish. Good electronics are very important when fishing this type of lake with steep drops and average depths of over 60ft. On a late winter day like this I was just happy to be out on the water so you can imagine how pumped I was to hook into this beautiful smallie. At 20.25 inches and close to 4lbs it is my biggest smallmouth caught from Kentucky waters. And at over 30ft deep it was also the deepest bass I have ever caught and my first smallmouth from the Big Rig. I hooked into this brute using a Dobyns 743SF spinning rod, bouncing a 1/2oz Silver Buddy off the bottom in 43 degree super clear water. My buddy was also able to land a personal best smallmouth from his Jackson Coosa fishing a dropshot. With temperatures heating up across the country its time to dust off the fishing gear and get out on the water. The early pre-spawn bite can be tough at times but you may have the opportunity to catch some of the biggest fish of the year. Submit a Comment Cancel replyYour email address will not be published.
