Beavers Bend Kayak Classic

Here is an event wrap up from the coordinator Jeff Hillhouse. Jeff worked with the folks at OKC kayak to produce an amazing first year event. The word on the street is that everyone is already looking forward to next year, to see what these guys do to up the anti. That will be tough from the looks of things. Well done guys!

The first annual Beavers Bend Kayak $3000 for the sponsored charity, Families Fighting Childhood Cancer. On the morning of April 5, 2014, a crowd of anglers gathered at the Grasshopper ramp on Broken Bow Lake in the Beavers Bend State Park. Tournament participants gathered for take-off at safe light for a chance to win a $3000 first place prize, a Hobie Outback as second place prize, and a Jackson Big Rig for Big Bass. As well as numerous other prizes paid down to tenth place. With the promise of amazing fishing and incredible prizes up for grabs, the BBKC attracted anglers from several states including Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Kansas. Many anglers were new to kayaking and thanks to OKC Kayak they were able to demo and use a kayak during the tournament for the first time. Brent Wilson noted, “I really appreciate the attention to detail you had on the entire event from the captain’s bag to the weigh-in location, you guys had it covered.”

Some anglers chose to return to the ramp early but most braved the weather, which served them well by the end of the day. Robbie Milam from TX was able to adjust his pattern to the changing conditions resulting in a first place win for him. Coming in at a close second, Matthew Scotch reaped the reward of fishing with his gut and grinding it out. “You just can’t say enough about the great job that the tournament organizers did for this event. Everything from picking an amazing charity to benefit, securing the best sponsors, and the running of the Beavers Bend Kayak Classic was top notch. The fishing was not easy Saturday. You really had to grind your spots to find quality bites but in the end, a couple of us figured them out. I’m really lucky and proud to have been a part of such an awesome event and look forward to seeing how this tournament grown into its second year.” Compared to the size of pre-tournament fish, a small fish won Big Bass, an 18.5” fish caught by Vance Fielder netting him the Jackson Big Rig. Third place went to Brent Wilson with one of the few female anglers, Sarah Hargis, close behind in fourth place.
