Bob’s Hole Rodeo has been cancelled in part to a low
snow year and lack of rain. Despite the event organizers great efforts,
it was simply impossible to get the Clackamas up to Bob’s Hole levels
for the competition. We are all upset to see such a great event not happen.
A big thanks Alder Creek Crew, Jim, Keith, Brian, Ken and everyone else
who helped to make the Oregon Cup a great event for the first part of
the week.

Alder Creek Shop Visit
Stephen and I began our time in Portland with
a visit to Alder Creek kayak shop. We had a great clinic. All the staff
loves the boats and cannot wait for the creek boats and river running
creek boats. The staff are all great paddlers, and THE Jackson Kayak experts
in the Portland area. Check out this neat store on the water at www.aldercreek.com.

Maupin Rodeo Cancelled
The Tuesday event of the Oregon Cup was originally
planned to be on the impressive C-Wave of the Deschutes. High water, forced
the organizers to move to Beaver Tail. Unfortunately, the level never
dropped even enough for that spot to be any good. After practicing for
two days, every competitor agreed on Tuesday morning NOT to compete and
simply split the event’s points and winnings. FYI, at Tuesday’s level,
even the pro men were having trouble consistently sticking flat spins.
To make matters worse, Devon’s awesome dog Ally really hurt her paw on
the walk down to the river. The vet wasn’t certain whether she was bitten
by a snake, spider, scorpion, or simply crushed her paw under the loose
rock. Whatever the cause, poor Ally’s front paw was one massive bruise,
and swelled way up. We had to send her back to Lewiston to heal for the
rest of our trip. Check out the shot of Ally with a pogie full of ice
on her paw!

Kayak Shed Shop Visit
After the cancelled event on the Deschutes and
a visit to the vet for Ally we headed to Hood River for our visit with
John and Barney from the Kayak Shed. Barney will be filming the Reno River
Festival for TV. We cannot wait to see him again in Reno. The shop is
great and also cannot wait for the new boats. Located in the shadows of
Mt. Hood, this is an extremely cool shop in a very cool town. It is surrounded
by fantastic creek runs, playspots, and river runs. Check them out at
http://www.kayakshed.com

Check out the shots from Alder Creek, the Kayak
Shed, Beaver Tail hole and campground, an injured Ally-dog, and Dave MacKintosh’s
shots from my clinic in Hood River with Rachel.
On to Reno!
