It was 4:00 am Thursday morning in Rock Island. Why
was I awake? Oh
yeah, travel…weather.com informs me that Watertown, NY will be snowing
and
35 degrees. Why would I leave the warmth and beauty of Rock Island for
such
brutal cold? After 7 hours of flying, I arrive at the Black river: much
colder, much more excited, and slightly disturbed to find other kayakers
building snowmen on the shore…What could cause such a situation like
this
to unfold? What could possibly motivate someone to trade climates in such
a
way? The answer is simple:

INNER CITY STRIFE!

After my last taste of this incredible wave, I’ve wanted
more. This weekend, I had 3 awesome days on the river, had the opportunity
to paddle with lots of friends from all over, had a night of HORRIBLE
stomach flu, and enjoyed what this emerging scene had to offer. Temperatures
went from low 30’s on Thursday to around 50 on Sunday! Other Big-Wave
addicts traveled from all over to converge on this place: Ottawa, Montreal,
New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee were just some of the homes
left behind for days of fun. Sunday was incredible: the eddy full of kayakers
with smiles on their faces going huge–while giving Watertown’s gem the
credibility it’s deserved for years. This is one of the best waves in
the world.

Enjoy the pics! All photos were shot by Jeremy Laucks,
Jennifer Kellerman, and Stephen Wright.
