Blue Mountain Outfitters and a weekend at Holtwood! by Will Richardson | Mar 20, 2006 | Whitewater | 0 comments By Stephen Wright. Learn more about Stephen. March 20, 2006 Photos I had the opportunity to drive to PA on Thursday to deliver some new boats and outfitting upgrade kits to Blue Mountain Outfitters. Blue Mountain is an EXTREMELY cool paddle shop in Harrisburg that has EVERYTHING you could ever need to kayak. The shop is run by Doug and Mary, who have years of whitewater experience and have built an incredible dealer–This is THE place to go in the Harrisburg area for a Jackson Kayak new boat or demo. I spent Friday working with Eric (Mary’s son) to upgrade their 2005 stock of demo boats and a few retail boats with Boat Armor Outfitting. On Saturday, I got to go back to one of my favorite places to paddle in the world: Holtwood on the Susquehanna. Holtwood is an INCREDIBLE play area on in the middle of nowhere where there are almost never lines to surf the awesome waves and holes. At most levels there are several world-class features to play, but it was low water for us so we only had the “classic” hole of Holtwood, which is named Storm Hole. It was the perfect place to work on all the new moves, and enjoy doing all the older ones. This was where I learned to cartwheel left years ago and spent LOTS of time there when I lived in PA. I was joined by some of my favorite people to paddle-with during the two days: Todd Baker, Jen Kellerman, James Sneeringer, Jeremy Laucks, and Eric from Blue Mountain. Todd was working on learning to McNasty, Jen was working on spins and surfing (with an occasional tricky-woo), Jeremy was also working McNastys, James was Cartwheeling-blunting-and looping, and I was trying everything I could think-of! What a great spot to get some training-in for places like Reno, Vail, and Salida! I had a blast dialing-in my lunar orbits, tricky-woos, Mcnastys, Monkeys, and other good stuff. It was really cold and windy, so we spent a lot of time shivering in between rides on Saturday. This motivated us to build a fire today, which helped a lot. Tomorrow I’ll stop by our Richmond dealer: Appomatox River Company, then make the long drive back to Rock Island…10 hours! I hear there’s rain in the forcast!
