There is NO whitewater kayaking in Nova Scotia but…

There is a relatively large kayaking community and last week I managed to meet up with some locals to play on three different rivers.

Our first river adventure (we had already been to the ocean for some surf) was the Gold River: a local gem with two sections and lots of action. In Klaas’ words, ‘I didn’t think I was going to get my hair wet,’ until we came upon the first rapid that is. A tricky entry into a nice boof had us on our toes for the rest of the day. In reality that first rapid was certainly the most exciting (that and the shuttle, phew). We met some new friends (thanks Mark, Monica, Dave, Glenn and Sophia) and enjoyed scouting, running and a full day on the river.
And the action didn’t stop. Our next two rivers, the Musquodoboit and the Medway were both play sections that Dustin kindly led us to. Great play features and unseasonably warm weather allowed us to surf to our hearts content. My favourite spot was on the Medway, Fisher’s hole. I never did ask where the name came from but after two session of huge air, big loop, space gozillas and more I can only assume it originated from plowing your bow deep (as if you’re looking for fish). A great spot and another reason why there is NO kayaking in Nova Scotia.

With so little to do I’m looking forward to our next river adventure on the East Coast. Stay tuned.
