Today the temperature was 30 degrees and the water was a little warmer when we all convened at Sullivan Hole. Jud Keiser, Dave Turner, Chris & Liberty Hoffer, a young kid paddling a Super Star who started two months ago, and myself set out in our JK kayaks to paddle on the Spokane River. About eight other kayakers came down the river and joined us for a few surfs at the Sullivan Hole just outside of downtown Spokane, Washington and somewhat on my route to the dentist in Lewiston; just two hours past. “It is always worth the drive,” my favorite quote from Clay Wright got me to the river on this chilly day.

I was plenty warm play boating for two hours because of two essential pieces of dry gear. My All Star does not let a drop of water in (thanks EJ) and my NRS Women’s drysuit kept me dry on the inside. This time of year it is crucial to not have any water in your kayak. If you have a little it makes your feet super cold and sloshes around when you are doing tricks. Having warm layers that are dry inside help to keep your body temperature up. In return this keeps your hands and head warm too. These two elements, a dry kayak & a drysuit, allow you to kayak in cold weather without risking hypothermia.

I was nice and toasty. Being dry makes it possible and much better when you get out, slip your drysuit off, put your down coat on, your warm hat, and slip into your vehicle. All my under layers were dry after multiple loops and space Godzillas. Simply, a super winter kayak day made possible by perfect gear.

Paddle safe, paddle dry!

PS- Yesterday we visited the Salmon River outside of Riggins. It was even colder. Enjoy the photos from our surf session at Peace Wave. This update was edited by the New Meadows 6th grade students. Great job class! Ms. Devon
