I had a great time this weekend paddling on a couple of my local rivers for the annual Alabama Mountain Games. The weekend started off with a drive up to Short Creek Falls in Guntersville, Alabama. AMG’s signature event known as “Huck Fest” is held here every year off of the ~15 foot waterfall. In this event, kayakers compete against each other to see who can do the hardest and most unique freestyle tricks off the waterfall. After a long day of crazy tricks and even crazier crashes I ended up in second place.
The next day everyone headed down to my local play spot, ender hole, for the freestyle competition. Extremely low water made the competition interesting and exciting. Tricks had to be performed perfectly to land in the small and rocky hole. My 2013 Jackson All-Star is still going strong and helped me perform many of the harder tricks and pull out the 1st place finish in Men’s Pro.

After the kayak competitions were over everyone headed back to the festival grounds at Boogie Bottoms in Locust Fork, Alabama. The day was finished off with campfires, listening to live bands and awards. The prizes were great thanks to all the sponsors and they even raffled off a Jackson Supercharger.
Overall AMG was super fun this year! Thanks to Jeremy Adkins for his hard work in organizing the event. I’m glad I got to get out and paddle this whole weekend and hope to be out on the river a lot more in the upcoming months. Huge thanks to Kokatat for the dry-suit that kept me warm while jumping off Short Creek Falls into the icy cold water, Snapdragon for the great skirts, and Jackson for the best boats out there by far. Hope to see everyone again next year!
