How to Sweep Roll

Learn to SWEEP ROLL by doing exercises in the video!

What is it?

It is an alternative version of the roll where instead of getting up with the blade at a perpendicular spot, you keep sweeping it to the tail and bringing the hips up all the way from starting the sweep till its end. It is good alternative for these that cannot fold to the front for an eskimo roll. This roll is also safer for your shoulders and more useful in aerated water. Additionally it will be used as a part of multiple tricks like felix or space godzilla in the example, so make sure to give it a try!

Step by Step

1. Rotate to the side and fold yourself forward bringing your paddle alongside the boat. Leading blade laying flat on the surface of the water by rolling your wrists forwards. Set the second hand close to the kayak with the elbow locked on the side of the boat. The head should be folded downwards as close to the paddle as your mobility allows.
2. Flip upside down whilst maintaining the position.
3. Make a wide sweep stroke with your leading blade keeping it as close to the surface as possible. Open up your body keeping the paddle paralel to it. Move your blade all the way to the stern avoiding tension on the blade.
4. At the same time as you start the sweep – pull with your knees and flick the hips rotating your body towards the water and observing the blade.
5. Bring your body up back to basic position keeping your hands at height of your shoulders. Keep looking at the blade next to your tail that should be moving out of the water.
