Learn to BACK DECK ROLL by doing exercises in the video!

What is it?

The Back Deck Roll is an alternative version of the Eskimo Roll where paddler goes towards the tail and rolls under it to come back on opposite side of the boat bringing the blade from tail towards the bow. It is often the quicker version of an eskimo roll that allows you to roll up from the back of the boat which is often a place where you flip. This allows you to save time on the setup.

Step by Step

  1. Starting at a basic position, put your leading blade a little bit higher.
  2. Roll your wrists up.
  3. Put your leading blade on the other side of the kayak, looking towards the tail.
  4. Keeping the secondary hand close to your body, straighten your leading hand and bring it around the tail to the opposite side of the kayak.
  5. Once the paddle starts going from the tail to the bow, use the hip and knee flick and pull down the blade to bring the boat upright.
  6. Bring your head last out of the water.
  7. Come back to the basic position.
