Avoiding the imminent ear surgery that every kayaker will face without protection. by Boyd Ruppelt | Jan 11, 2022 | Instructional, jacksonkayak.com, JAdventures Main Banner, Playboating, Whitewater, Whitewater Feature, Whitewater Instruction, WW Disciplines | 0 comments Every sport has its inherent risks, but like many paddlers before me and plenty of paddlers after me I had no idea just how imminent Surfer’s Ear really was. I’m not talking about swimmer’s ear or simple ear infections. This is a video warning of the inevitable bone growth in your ear canals if you kayak in cold (68*F and cooler) water and wind. The good news is that it is completely avoidable. While I’m not a doctor and don’t claim to be, I had to have surfer’s ear surgery myself in both ears, so I wanted to share what I learned so that maybe you can avoid the surgery I had to have.
