Gnarvana Boofing on the Watauga Gorge

Watauga Gorge is a beloved Class IV-V river run near my neck of the woods. Many locals describe it as the biscuits and gravy of whitewater boat riding in the southeast! It is chocked with a variety of different rapids that host many fun boofs, slots and slides. The run even has a 16′ tall waterfall near the Stateline from North Carolina to welcome you into Tennessee. This stretch of river becomes an instant classic for any paddler who experiences the magic of this place. It will always hold a special place in my heart for sure!

Three paddling pals and I got out on the run a few weeks ago to enjoy it on a mild winter day. It was flowing on the lower side of good (200 cfs), but a fine level to show Tyler down for his personal first descent. We all happen to be paddling Gnarvanas on this day too for our first time in the gorge with this new boat design. Needless to say the boats shinned brightly with all the great creeking moves found on this run. Check out Tyler’s video edit from the day featuring lots of boofs!
