Learn to POWER STROKE by doing exercises in the video!

What is it?

The Power Stroke is a basic stroke used to move forward, which gives you the most acceleration. The catch phase is reaching to put the blade in by your feet. The pull phase starts by pushing on the top hand and pulling on the bottom hand, rotating your torso to engage the strong muscles of your core and upper back, pushing on the foot on the same side as the paddle to help translate force through to the boat. Pulling the blade out by the hip and transitioning to the other side, to reach with the opposite blade to start again.

Step by Step

  1. Start in the basic position and put your blade near your feet while holding the shaft firmly. Your upper hand should be in front of your forehead, just above your eyes. You should be looking straight under your wrist—whole blade in the water.
  2. Push the upper hand and pull the lower one moving the paddle close to the boat. Make sure your upper hand stays above your eyes until the end of the pull at the hip. Next, rotate your upper body 15-30 degrees to extend your reach and pull your core and your near foot.
  3. Put the second blade in the water, set up hand high, repeat.
