One thing I’ve found over the years is that the top kayakers in the world all have certain skills and regular practices in common. Do this warm up, listed below, every time you touch the water and your boat and edge control will improve drastically. For the more advanced kayakers out there, you can condense it into lean cleans both ways, power circles, and S-turn drills. The result is a drastic improvement in performance and overall boat control.

1. Edges 1, 2, and 3 on both sides
2. Bow and Stern Smashes
3. Quadrant Drill or Lean Cleans both sides
4. Power Circles and Figure 8s (switching directions)

If you’re a newer kayaker and still need to learn these skills, check out my Edge Control: Quadrants video and the 5 Golden Rules for Kayaking videos on the same channel, Send School.
